- Low front boundaries and low (under one metre) hedges and walls at the front of your home will prevent thieves from hiding.
- Lock side gates at all times and make sure they are secure. Open gates allow robbers to enter your home without being spotted by neighbours or bystanders on the street.
- Maintain high hedges, walls, and fences around your backyard by using trellis and prickly defensive planting on the side and rear boundaries (over 1.8 metres). To make it tougher for robbers to scale gates and fences, add lightweight trellis and grow some prickly plants.
- Gravel walks and driveways make it more difficult for criminals to hide their presence.
- Install a security light outside to ensure that trespassers are seen as they approach.
- Install a burglar alarm system; use an intruder alarm system.
- Secure your shed; make sure it is fastened down and always kept locked and secured to prevent it from being lifted to obtain access. Power tools and bicycles are common assets found in sheds.
- Never leave tools laying around since they could be used as a technique to break into your house.
